Self-ligating braces

Self-ligating braces are an alternative way of approaching traditional therapy with classic braces. Conventional braces consist mainly of metal brackets and orthodontic wire that are joined together with the help of metal or elastic ligatures. Self-ligating braces work the same way but do not need elastic or metal ligatures. Instead, they use a system with special clips built into the brackets that secures the wire, so that the wire is held but also has a margin of mobility inside the braces. This reduces friction when moving the wire and may in some cases shorten the duration of treatment.

Other benefits include:

  • The absence of elastic ligatures facilitates oral hygiene, as it narrows the surfaces where food debris could be trapped.
  • Fewer intermediate visits may be required for modifications to the appliances during treatment and the time required for such modifications may be reduced.

Self-ligating braces can have both metal and ceramic brackets. They are used as an alternative to most orthodontic problems but the choice always depends on the particular characteristics of each case.
